First PFAS in period underwear and now toxic metals in tampons? As if menstruators don’t have enough to worry about, a recent study has unveiled a concerning issue: tampons, one of the most widely used menstrual products, may contain several toxic metals, including arsenic and lead. This revelation raises significant health concerns, especially considering the highly absorptive nature of vaginal tissue, which could result in systemic exposure to these harmful substances.
The Findings: Metals in Tampons
A groundbreaking study analyzed 30 tampons from 14 different brands to determine the concentration of 16 metal(loid)s. The results were alarming, showing measurable concentrations of all assessed metals, including:
- Lead: A toxic metal with no safe level of exposure. It can cause severe health problems, including neurological and developmental issues. Long-term exposure to lead can result in cognitive impairments, cardiovascular problems, and kidney damage.
- Arsenic: Arsenic is a naturally occurring element known for its toxicity and carcinogenic properties. Exposure to arsenic, even in small amounts, can lead to skin lesions, developmental effects, cardiovascular disease, neurotoxicity, and an increased risk of cancer.
- Cadmium: Cadmium is a highly toxic metal that can cause serious health issues. It primarily affects the kidneys, causing renal dysfunction, but can also lead to bone demineralization and lung damage. Long-term exposure to cadmium is associated with an increased risk of cancer, particularly lung cancer.
The study highlighted that metal concentrations varied by region, organic versus non-organic materials, and brand types. Interestingly, while lead concentrations were higher in non-organic tampons, arsenic levels were higher in organic tampons.
Health Implications
The presence of these metals in tampons is particularly concerning due to the potential for them to leach out and be absorbed through the vaginal epithelium, entering the systemic circulation. This could lead to various health issues, as even low levels of exposure to metals like lead and arsenic can have detrimental effects on the body. For instance, lead exposure is linked to neurological and developmental problems, while arsenic is a known carcinogen.
Safer Alternatives to Toxic Tampons
Given these findings, it’s crucial to consider safer, non-toxic alternatives for menstrual products. Here are some recommended options:
1. Period Underwear
Period underwear provides a comfortable and sustainable alternative. Aisle period underwear is made from high-quality, non-toxic materials designed to absorb menstrual blood without the need for additional products like pads or tampons. Aisle products have been third-party tested for toxins like PFAS with no detectable levels to 1ppm.
2. Menstrual Cups
Menstrual cups are reusable, medical-grade silicone products that collect menstrual blood rather than absorb it. Aisle cups provide a safe and eco-friendly option for your bleeding days.
3. Cloth Pads
Cloth pads are washable and reusable, making them an eco-friendly choice. Aisle has been a leader in the cloth pad space since we launched as Lunapads in 1993. We offer cloth pads made with TransDRY® and organic cotton, without the addition of harmful chemicals.
4. Organic Cotton Tampons
While the study did find some metals in organic tampons, they generally contain fewer harmful chemicals compared to conventional tampons. Look for brands certified organic and free from pesticides, dyes, and fragrances. Still not sure? Reach out to the brand for more information.
Our Choices Matter
So what does all of this prove? A lot of these big box brands are only concerned about the all-mighty dollar at the cost of our health and safety. Regulations aren’t strict enough and this recent study on the presence of toxic metals in tampons proves the need for greater transparency and safety in menstrual products. As awareness grows, it is crucial to support the brands that provide safe products and care about our health. By choosing non-toxic menstrual products, we can reduce our exposure to harmful substances while sending a message to large corporations that we will not tolerate their lack of concern for our health and safety.
