First Week of School

Dear Parents,

The class has finished their first week of school and I have to say I am extremely impressed with the students' eagerness to learn and focus in the classroom. We have had some great conversations and discussions about social studies, science, math, religion and language arts. I was very impressed with their engagement in our lesson on the Titanic in reading class the last few days. Many of the students received in class coupons to be used next week based upon their amazing behavior in class. Each child received a punch card the first day of school and many students received 10 whole punches this week earning them a reward. I expect that many more students will be receiving coupons next week. I want to thank you for all the emails I have received this week regarding what has been happening in the classroom. I appreciate the support and feedback. I want to remind everyone that Back to School night will be held next Wednesday. This back to school night is for grades 5-8. I will be staying late that evening for those parents who have children in the middle school as well as 5th grade so that I can speak to everyone!

I hope you all have a wonderful 3 day weekend!

Welcome To The 5th Grade!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 5th Grade! I am looking forward to meeting you and your children on Monday morning. I am also looking forward to working with you all this year. I wanted to send this email with just a few reminders so we can have a successful first day and first week of school. The first thing I would like to ask is if you could download the app Remind. This app allows us to have communication through text messaging without sharing our phone numbers. This app allows me to also send out quick announcements instead of an email. I used this app frequently last year and it allowed me to notify you throughout the week about what was going on in the classroom or allowed me to send out reminders. I will give a further demonstration on back to school night.

For the first day of school, you are allowed to come to the classroom in the morning to help drop your child's supplies off in the classroom. I ask that once you have helped your child with their supplies that you tell them to have a good day and depart so that the children can begin to learn the classroom routines. Students are permitted to bring a healthy snack to eat during the day. I ask that the snack be something that can be eaten while the children continue to do their assignments. I also want to remind you to pack a lunch for your child since the first day of school is a full day. I also ask that your child arrive to school on-time this week. The first few weeks of school are centered on rules and procedures for the classroom and the school building. I want to make sure that students have every opportunity to become adjusted to what is expected of them in the 5th grade.

The first night for homework children will be asked to cover their textbooks and workbooks. Textbook covers will be sent home with the children on the first day of school and I ask that you please not tape the book covers to the textbooks. The tape will damage the textbooks and limit the amount of use for future students. On your supply list you were instructed to purchase contact paper. This contact paper should be kept at home and used to cover all the workbooks. This will help to keep the workbooks intact throughout the schools year.

Finally, I want to welcome our Para Educator Mrs. Simmons, who will be assisting the 5th grade class this year for Math and Reading. She will be working in small groups with your children to provide additional instruction in the classroom. She is a great addition to the 5th grade classroom and I know we will all appreciate her assistance.

I look forward to meeting you all next week and I look forward to an exciting new year. If you have any questions please email me at grade5@stmarylh.org or leave me a message on remind or at school!

Enjoy your last weekend of summer!
