Welcome to 3rd Grade

3rd grade update-Week of 11/23

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. Here is what we will be doing this week.

Math- We will still be working on our times tables by practicing our seven and eight times tables. If you are working with your students at home make sure to review 0-12 times tables. This will ensure that they are ready for next year.

On Friday the students were given their first math journal entry. It needs to be completed and turned in on Wednesday. Make sure to complete all of the sections of the entry. Refer to the page glued inside the front cover for more information.

Reading- We will not be reading a new story in our Treasures book this week. Instead we will be reviewing skills that we have already worked on this year. These skills include fact or opinon, making inferences, possessive nouns, action verbs, and singular/ plural nouns.

There will not be spelling or vocab words this week as well.

Writing- Last week the students picked an endangered animal to research. We will be using the web to research the animal and writing a five paragraph paper about it.

Religion- On Monday we will be playing a smartboard review game to study for the chapter test the next day. The test on Tuesday will focus on Chapter 4. This chapter talks about the rosary and the Joyful mysteries that we think about when we are praying the rosary.

Science- On Monday we will be playing a smartboard review game to review lesson six of chapter two. The quiz will be on lesson six. Your student has an outline in their binder that you can use to review the concepts. Remember the quizzes will be used to create the chapter test.

Social Studies- The community project will be due on Monday. Several students have already turned it in early. We will have a test on Chapter 2 when we return from Thanksgiving break.

Things to remember:

Money for the Thanksgiving feast is due by Monday. Any student who has not paid by Monday will need to bring a lunch to school that day.

Mid-quarter reports will be going out the week after Thanksgiving break. For this quarter I will be sending out a report to all students regardless of their grades. The report needs to be signed and returned.

There will be a taco lunch on Wednesday December 2nd.

We will have a 12:30 dismissal on Wednesday November 25th and Friday December 4th.

Enjoy your holiday!!

3rd grade update-Week of 11/16

Thank you to everyone that I talked to at conferences. There were some great conversations. Here is what we will be working on next week.

Math- We will be continuing to work on multiplication. The students will be working on fives and tens on Monday. There will be a quiz to check their progress on Tuesday. The quiz will cover zero, one, two, three, four, five, and ten times tables. I will be using this assessment to see who needs more practice with this skill and who is ready to move on.

We will move onto six, seven, eight, nine, eleven, and twelve times tables. After students have practiced those we will have another quiz and then a test covering all of the times table (zero-twelve).

The math journals need to decorated and covered with contact paper by Monday November 16th. The first entry will go out Friday the 20th and be due back on Thursday the 26th.

Reading- The test on Friday November 20th will cover making inferences, vocabulary words, action verbs, and using commas when writing addresses.

Starting this week the must dos will be checked on Thursdays and not Fridays. This means that the students will not get extra time Friday morning to complete them. Please remind your students about using their time effectively.

The students will be getting a vocabulary packet this week in addition to the reading review worksheet they have already been receiving. The packet will have four vocabulary worksheets and will be due on Thursdays as part of their must dos.

Religion- Third grade has been studying the rosary and Mary in this chapter. We will be playing a review game on Thursday and their test will be next Monday the 23rd.

Science- We will be finishing lesson six in chapter two this week. They will take a lesson quiz on Wednesday. We will be reading one more lesson and having one more quiz before the chapter test. The chapter test questions will be taken from the quizzes. So keep them at home to study.

Social Studies-We will be finishing up chapter two this week and next week. Chapter two discusses rural, urban, and suburban communities. The community project will be due Monday November 23rd and will count as a quiz grade.

On Monday there will be a flyer going out for our Thanksgiving celebration. Each student is being asked to send in $5 if they would like to participate in the feast. If you are able to help please contact Mrs. Nichols. Her contact information is provided on the flyer. There will be a pizza lunch on Wednesday. That is also the day to pick up any Gianni's merchandise that was sold. The pick up will be from 12-6pm. There is a HSA meeting on Thursday. All students who have a parent or guardian present will get a homework pass on Friday. Make sure you check in with me so I can add you to my list.

Thank you for your help and continued support!

Heat in the classroom- The heat in the building is not on yet. Because of this please make sure that your child has layers when they come to school including a St. Mary's fleece or sweater. They should also wear layers even once the heat is turned on becuase it can get hot in the classroom.

Trunk or Treat and Halloween Party- Tomorrow is Trunk or Treat. Students will bring a costume to school and then put it over their uniform around 2:00. Students are allowed to wear their P.E. uniform to school tomorrow since it is easier to put the costume over their uniforms. We will also be having a Halloween Party as well. If you would like to donate something for the party please consult the bright orange paper that went home today for Mrs. Nichols contact information. She would like to know what everyone is bringing so that we have a variety of items for the students to eat.

Variety Hot Lunch-Students will be having variety lunch on Wednesday November 4th. If you have not selected that lunch for your students please make sure they bring a lunch that day.

Report Cards- The report cards will be going out on November 6th. Parents may keep the report card but sign and return the envelope.

Conferences- Conferences will be held on Wednesday November 11th all day. The students will not be attending school that day.  Parent is expected to attend the conference and will be recieving paperwork to arrange conference at a time that fits into their schedules. Let me know if you have any questions.
