Art > Animal shapes and spaces (7)

Sixth graders investigated the spaces around objects in a composition. They looked at the horse compositions of Susan Rothenberg whose negative spaces are as interesting as her shapes. Then they spent a class drawing animal shapes from a PowerPoint of photographs of animals in motion. They chose one to enlarge for a painting. The animal had to fill the page to create interesting spaces in the background. They painted them with complementary colors, using black to darken one color and white to lighten the other.
